I just came back from my identical twin niece's birthday party, they just turned 5 years old. The party was full of little ones running about on the pop and sugar and yes, there were a couple of injuries amongst the flurry of girly gift bags.
Really though, it's the cake itself that I wanted to comment on the most! Not even the taste of the cake or it's icing, just simply the look of the cake. It was a Disney Princess themed cake (sorry no pics :( til I check with my sis-in-law) done with both airbrushing and traditional, piped buttercream icing. However, it's the combined decorating techniques and colours that created the most beautiful cake I've seen in awhile. The was of a whimsical flower garden with two tiny Princesses standing in a little gazebo overlooking a crystal blue pond. The cake itself was a plain rectangular shape, about 3-4" in thick and measured approximately 18" x 12" in size iced completely in thick white icing with a raised area for the gazebo. Airbrushing was done on the sides of the cake in a pretty lavender that began dark at the bottom gradually fading to white. The top of the cake was then air brushed in greens and blues to create the grass and water. Buttercream icing was also used in those four colours along with hot pink, yellow and lime green. There were tiny flowers, small bushes, grass and rocks creating using various piping techniques too! It really was a beautiful looking cake and teased my sister in law when I commented on how much her cake decorating techniques had improved since the last party ;0)
...last Halloween I attended a party where they served a graveyard 'cake' made of cupcakes and I loved it, not predictable nor boring and the cemetary scene was perfect! Once the cupcakes were pushed together they too were covered in white icing. The cake decorator then airbrushed a dark brown and black base for the ground portion of the graveyard then shades of bright to and dark blue to portray the midnight sky of Halloween. The colours were so vivid and intense it practically left off the table into my mouth ;)
A video of awesome cakes that I didn't bake, nor did she (the girl who made the vid ;)...but someone did and they look fantastic!
